history

After the fundamental redesign of the baroque gardens of the Augarten under Emperor Charles VI. In the French style, which the garden architect Jean Trehet was commissioned to carry out in 1712 , several smaller and larger palaces were built in the Augarten area. The largest of these palaces was built earlier, towards the end of the 17th century, by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for councilor Zacharias Leeb. In 1780 this palace became the property of Emperor Josef II . It remained in the possession of the Habsburg-Lothringen imperial family until the beginning of the 20th century . During this time, especially in the 19th century, numerous festivals were held in the palace and a salon was opened. Guests at the time included Richard Wagner , Franz Liszt and Hans Makart .

The largest festival in the Palais Augarten took place as part of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 , guests included Emperor Franz Joseph I and Tsar Alexander II of Russia . In 1897 there was a major redesign of the palace, as it was adapted for the family of Emperor Franz Joseph's nephew, Archduke Otto . On September 1, 1903, Franz Joseph gave a family dinner here for King Edward VII of Great Britain, who had come on a state visit.

During the First World War , Archduchess Maria Josepha Luise von Sachsen cared for war wounded in her Palais Augarten, where she had set up a hospital.

From 1934 to 1936 the palace was inhabited by the Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg . During the Second World War , the property was badly damaged and restored almost to its former appearance after the end of the war; some of the original furnishings of the palace can still be found. In 1948 it was given to the Vienna Boys' Choir . Today, like the entire Augarten, it is owned by the Austrian state.
