The eye stripe surgeonfish ( Acanthurus dussumieri ) is a kind from the family of surgeonfish . The hallmarks are the yellow eye band and the white, black-rimmed scalpel . Eye stripe surgeonfish are large animals that can grow up to 54 inches long. Therefore, they are unsuitable as aquarium fish.

Eye-Stripe Surgeonfish live in the Indo-Pacific , from South Africa to Japan and from Hawaii to the Great Barrier Reef . They are not found in large parts of the central Pacific. Eye stripe surgeonfish migrate to the Atlantic in South Africa . The animals mostly live on outer reefs to a depth of 130 meters or over sea grass meadows.

Eye stripe surgeonfish are mostly solitary animals. They rarely come together in smaller swarms. They do not spawn in schools like many other surgeonfish, but in pairs. Old males get a forehead hump.

Eye stripe doctor fish eat the fine layers of brown , green , diatoms and detritus that lie on the ground.
