History of the Beethoven Quarter

The Augsburg Beethoven Quarter was laid out between 1880 and around 1910 as an elegant bourgeois residential area west of the former firing trench. After the fortress status of Augsburg was lifted in 1860, it was part of the first major city expansion on the area between the broken western city wall and the Augsburg- Munich railway line .

Numerous outstanding Augsburg architectural offices, such as Jack and Wanner , Krauss and Dürr, Oswald and Rottmann, Bresele and H. Schnell, took part in the design and construction of the Beethovenviertel . The name goes back to the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven .

The development was carried out consistently with two to four-storey residential buildings in open-plan construction. The neo-renaissance , neo-baroque and art nouveau styles predominated in the facades and enclosures of the front gardens . Curved streets, gardens and public green gave the quarter a picturesque character that corresponded to contemporary urban planning intentions.

It is thanks to the solid building structure and the generous dimensioning of the land that the Beethovenviertel was largely able to survive the bombing of the Second World War unscathed.

Beethovenviertel today

Even today, visitors can still feel the upper-class charm of the turn of the century on their way through the Beethoven district. The richly decorated houses from the Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau era have been extensively preserved and have been faithfully restored in recent years. Despite the sometimes horrific rents: its magnificent residential buildings, the large green areas and the absolute tranquility despite its central location make Augsburg's Beethoven Quarter by far the most sought-after residential area in downtown Augsburg.
