August (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck ( February 13, 1652 - September 26, 1689 near Bonn ) was a German duke and since 1675 the second duke from the Oldenburg branch of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck .

Life

August was the first son of Duke August Philipp (1612–1675) and Marie Sibylle Countess of Nassau-Saarbrücken (1628–1699). There were four more sons and four daughters who reached adulthood. August Philipp was the fifth son of Duke Alexander von Sonderburg and the grandson of the founder of the Oldenburg branch line Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, Johann the Younger . In 1676 August married Hedwig Luise, Countess zur Lippe-Alverdissen (1650–1731), daughter of Philip I of Lippe-Alverdissen , ancestor of the Schaumburg-Lippe family . They had a son, Friedrich Wilhelm (1682-1719), married to Maria di Sanfre and a daughter Dorothea Henriette von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck (1678-1750).

The headquarters of Beck (Löhne-Ulenburg) was in the Principality of Minden , which had been owned by the Electorate of Brandenburg since 1648 . Due to the expansion of its army, Brandenburg had a great need for soldiers and officers. Noble birth was the most important prerequisite for attaining the rank of officer. That is why it made sense for the sons from noble families to embark on an officer career. August became major general in the Brandenburg Army. He died of dysentery in 1689 . His son Friedrich Wilhelm I succeeded him as Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck.
