Life

August Ammann came from a pastor's family. His father, Ernst Franz Theophil Ammann (born December 23, 1808 in Braubach ), was pastor in Driedorf from 1838 to 1841, was transferred to Kronberg im Taunus with effect from January 1, 1841 and died shortly afterwards on August 24, 1841 in Weilburg . He was married to the pastor's daughter Henriette Dorothea geb. Rhod from Niederbachheim near Braubach.

August Ammann first attended elementary school in Braubach and from 1850 to 1859 attended the Philippinum grammar school in Weilburg. His friendship with the later classical philologist and religious scholar Hermann Usener (1834–1905) also came from this time . After graduating from high school, Ammann first studied law in Bonn , then Old and New Philology in Bonn and Göttingen, and passed the first state examination in Göttingen in autumn 1863 . From 1864 until his retirement in 1890 he was a teacher at the ducal, later the royal high school in Wiesbaden , initially as a collaborator and after his second state examination in 1865 as a full high school teacher from January 1, 1869. In addition to his subjects in classical philology (Latin, Greek), he acquired a license to teach French in 1875, but at times also taught in English. In 1877 he was promoted to senior teacher. For health reasons, he submitted his application for retirement in 1890 and was therefore retired with effect from October 1, 1890. Shortly before his retirement he was awarded the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class. He was subsequently awarded the title of professor in 1899. August Ammann died in Wiesbaden on April 26, 1910.

His poetic work consists mainly of prose and poetry.
