August Emil Alfred Beck (born January 28, 1812 in Gotha ; † August 7, 1874 there ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

Beck attended the Gotha Illustre grammar school and after graduating, studied Protestant theology and philology in Halle an der Saale . From 1834 to 1835 he traveled to France and England and in 1836 was employed as a teacher for English and French at the newly founded Gothaer Realschule. In 1845 he resigned from teaching and worked at the ducal archive in Gotha , the ducal library and in the coin cabinet.

His historical work on the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha was fundamental, especially his story of Duke Johann Friedrich the Middle in two volumes (1858). His history of the Gotha land (two volumes, 1868), on the other hand, was considered out of date during his lifetime. Beck wrote numerous articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

In 1868 he became a full member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt .
