Life

The son of a building contractor, he studied mathematics at the University of Bonn , but then quickly switched to chemistry and the University of Heidelberg . After only one semester he returned to Bonn and received his doctorate there in 1876 . He then worked as a lecture assistant at Kekulé and completed his habilitation in 1879. In addition to his subsequent position as a private lecturer, he developed close scientific cooperation with BASF in the field of dyes. In 1883 Bernthsen became an associate professor at the University of Heidelberg. He switched to industry in 1887 and, as the successor to Heinrich Caro , headed the main laboratory at BASF AG from 1889. From 1919 he was also an honorary professor at Heidelberg University. Act

In the field of dyes , he worked on aspects of organic and physical chemistry. August Behrentsen's scientific achievements include clarifying the constitution of methylene blue as a phenothiazine derivative and the development of numerous interesting dyes based on phenazine and acridine. He made significant contributions to the development of noun dyes . The Bernthsen reaction is named after him.

From 1922 to 1924 he was chairman of the Bunsen Society .
