August Bondeson

August Leonard Bondeson (born February 2, 1854 in Vessigebro , Falkenberg municipality , † September 23, 1906 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish writer , folklorist and doctor.

Life

Bondeson's parents were the shoemaker, saddler and craftsman Carl Bondeson and Lisa Beata Nygren. After elementary school he attended grammar school (Swedish: Läroverk ) in Halmstad and Gothenburg. He began studying at Uppsala University in 1876 and completed his training with a specialization in skin diseases in 1884 as a candidate and in 1889 as a licentiate in medicine. Thereupon he settled as a practicing doctor in Gothenburg.

Bondeson's father, who was known for his good memory and storytelling, aroused in him a great interest in writing. About half of the stories from Halländska sagor (German: sagas from Halland ) come from the father. During his relatively short life, Bondeson was very productive. His first book was published in 1875, shortly before he began his studies. Parallel to his studies and work as a doctor, he continued his literary work and published 22 books as well as a large number of stories in so-called Christmas newspapers (Swedish: Jultidningar ). Bondeson achieved his greatest success with the two-part novel Skollärare John Chronschoughs memoarer (German: school teacher John Chronschoughs memories ), which is about a smug elementary school teacher. He also wrote several songs and plays.

As a folklorist, he documented the culture of the rural population and described their life at the end of the 19th century with great realism. He traveled through Halland, Småland , Värmland , Hälsingland and Uppland to collect objects, folk tunes and stories. With humorous stories such as Allmogeberättelser and Historiegubbar på Dal , he created a large and loyal audience.

August Bondeson died unmarried in Gothenburg in 1906 and was buried in the church cemetery in Vessige. A granite memorial stone with a portrait medallion, designed by the architect Carl Bergsten , was set up there.
