Jan from Styrum
Jan von Styrum (* 13. April 1567 in Borculo , † November 6 . Jul / 16th November 1613 greg. In Terborg ) was a Dutch mercenary in the service of Spain during the Eighty Years' War , and from 1592 to 1597 governor of Groenlo .
He was a son of Hermann Georg von Limburg-Styrum and his wife Maria, née von Hoya.
In 1595 Jan von Styrum managed to defend the city of Groenlo against the troops of Moritz of Orange during the siege until a Spanish relief army under Cristóbal de Mondragón arrived and forced Moritz to retreat.
Two years later, Moritz of Orange reappeared and besieged the city. Jan von Styrum knew the plans because they had previously been made public by the States General . Therefore, as an additional precautionary measure, he had collected 2,000 guilders from the population in order to pay and store supplies for the crew. At the end of July, after a siege of 18 days , Groenlo was finally occupied by Moritz.
In 1603 he came into the possession of the Glory Wisch and the Kasteel Wisch , where he transferred his troops. Moritz gave him his permission to settle in Gelderland .
Jan von Styrum married on May 26, 1612 at Wisch Castle in Terborg with Walburga Anna (1580–1618), daughter of Count Wirich VI. by Daun-Falkenstein . The marriage remained childless.
