August Claus von Preen (* 1778 ; † August 28, 1821 near Potrems ) was Baden Chamberlain , member of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Select Committee and responsible for the erection of the Rostock Blücher Monument .

youth

Preen was born into the old Mecklenburg family of Preen as the son of a ducal-Brunswick chief steward . Like himself later, his father was also a member of the select committee. From this he inherited the Mecklenburg estate Dummerstorf . He received his education at the renowned pedagogy in Halle and at the Carolinum in Braunschweig . After studying in Göttingen , he spent a long time with friends Cuno von der Kettenburg (on Schwetzin) and Friedrich von Dewitz (on Cölpn) in Italy, especially in Rome, where he acquired philological, legal and art knowledge.

Act

On the occasion of the marriage of Duke Wilhelm of Braunschweig to a princess of Baden, he became Chamberlain of Baden. He used his work on the Select Committee to acquire the precious copper works on Egypt from Denon for the grand ducal library, today's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Library .

However, it achieved lasting importance when, on behalf of the Mecklenburg knighthood, initially against the will of the city of Rostock , he was appointed to be responsible for the erection of a Blücher monument in Rostock. The correspondence conducted with Goethe on the occasion of the performance of this task created a literary monument for him - preserved in the Schwerin state archives.

Because of this correspondence, Johann Gottfried Schadow was won over to work on the statue .

In addition, for his contemporaries, the conclusion of the knightly mortgage regulations , which he achieved in cooperation with Mayor Kütemeyer, was of considerable importance, as it clarified the priority of claims and replaced a regulation that had previously created "a lot of hardship".

He died in 1821 near Potrems as a result of a riding accident.
