August Cornelius Stockmann , also August Kornelius Stockmann (born May 14, 1751 in Schweikershain , † February 6, 1821 in Leipzig ), was a German lawyer and poet. He was a professor at the University of Leipzig and imperial court palace councilor.

Life

His father was Adolf August Stockmann. Stockmann enrolled at the Leipzig University in October 1769. In 1782 he became an associate professor of law at the Leipzig University and in 1789 a full professor of Saxon law. From 1778 until his death he was a member of the Leipzig Masonic lodge "Minerva to the three palms". In addition to his university work, Stockmann appeared as a writer and poet and for some time edited the Leipzig Muses Almanac published by the Leipzig publisher Engelhard Benjamin Schwickert . Taking up Goethe's Wertherstoff , but focusing on the figure of Lotte, he wrote the first Wertherr novel in 1775, which is part of a long series of literary subsidiary pieces, sequels and reproductions. As an author of occasional poems, Stockmann appeared in various societies, e. B. the Journal Society and the Masonic Lodge, and at official events. For example, he composed a Latin Carmen for the university's official turn-of-the-century celebration in 1801 . In his honor, a medal was struck in 1802 with his likeness on one side and a laurel wreath on the other.

Stockmann's estate fell to his brother in Auleben . His stud book with 49 entries, including by Goethe and Christoph Martin Wieland , was sold to a bidder for 24,000  DM at an auction of the autograph dealer JA Stargardt in 1991 .
