August Ferdinand Wäldner
August Ferdinand Wäldner (born August 29, 1817 in Halle (Saale) ; † July 30, 1905 ibid) was a German organ builder in Halle (Saale) who worked in Central Germany . His father Friedrich Wilhelm Wäldner founded the organ workshop, which he continued as the eldest son until around 1897.
Career
August Ferdinand Wäldner supported his father in his work from 1834; from 1839 he worked for him as a journeyman . When he took over his father's business in 1851, he has been building organs under his own responsibility. Because of his father's illness, it is likely that the instruments delivered up to 1852 can also be traced back to him. During the completion of the large cathedral organ in Halle, August Ferdinand signed the correspondence as the master organ builder from 1849.
On November 9, 1853, August Ferdinand Wäldner acquired Halle citizenship . On May 11, 1851, he married Dorothea Friederike Amalie Kellermann, who was the daughter of the gunsmith Johann Chr. Kellermann (middle name unknown) and Dorothea Christiane, née Lippert. August Ferdinand Wäldner probably only had one son: Friedrich Wilhelm ( Sic - first and second name after his own father) was born on December 20, 1856 in Halle and died before his father on May 30, 1904 in Hanover.
meaning
In total, August Ferdinand Wäldner created at least 52 organs (father and son together at least 75), which can be documented today (see the following list of organs) - sometimes Christian Wäldner, probably a brother of Friedrich Wilhelm Wäldner, is also named. The importance of the Wäldner company lies in the remarkable quality of craftsmanship and solidity as well as in the distinctly romantic sound style of the organs. Friedrich Wilhelm Wäldner was the region's first master organ builder who developed appropriate sound variants for his organs for the highly romantic music of his time - a tradition that his eldest son August Ferdinand Wäldner continued unchanged. For the 19th century, Wäldner organs - in addition to the organs by Friedrich Ladegast, mostly in the Merseburg and Weißenfels area - are the most important in the region in their classic design.
Organ directory
This directory was created by Michael Wünsche MA 2006, it is arranged alphabetically by place name (order: place, zip code, organ location (church or similar), year of construction, builder) Note: This list shows where August Ferdinand Wäldner's organs were originally stood - which does not necessarily mean that the respective organ is currently still there and / or can be played. The master's thesis contains more information.
