François Servais Auguste Gathy (born May 14, 1800 in Liège , † April 8, 1858 in Paris ) was a Belgian music writer and translator.

Life

As a child, Gathy fell off a swing. As a result, he later suffered from a crooked spine and remained short in stature. The deformity also limited his career choice.

In 1821 Gathy went to Hamburg and became an accountant in the Hoffmann & Campe bookstore. He also associated with Julius Campe privately. In 1825 he got to know Heinrich Heine through him , whom he admired all his life.

From 1828 to 1830 he studied music with Friedrich Schneider in Dessau . He then lived again in Hamburg, where he published a magazine called Musikalisches Conversations-Blatt in 1835 . From 1841 he worked as a music teacher in Paris.

He wrote for numerous music magazines, in particular for Robert Schumann's Neue Zeitschrift für Musik , with which he also conducted intensive correspondence from 1835 to 1853.
