Güzin Dino (* 1910 in Istanbul ; † May 30, 2013 in Paris ) was a Turkish linguist , literary scholar , translator and writer. She was married to the Turkish artist Abidin Dino .

Life

Dino was born in Istanbul in 1910 as the daughter of the director of the Ottoman bank Asım Dikel and his wife Ferdiye Hanım. Her grandfather was the journalist and poet Kemalpaşazade Lastik Sait Bey . The wealthy family was able to finance the daughter's good education. After attending the French-speaking private school Lycée Notre Dame de Sion Istanbul , Dino attended the Istanbul Universitesi and completed a degree in literature and the French language . She then worked as an assistant to the German Romance scholar and literary scholar Erich Auerbach , who taught European literature in Istanbul in the 1930s and 1940s after he was suspended as a Jew by the Nazis in 1935 as professor of Romance philology at the University of Marburg.

In the early 1940s she met the painter Abidin Dino. When he was exiled to Adana in 1941 because of his membership in the Turkish Communist Party , he was with him and married him there in 1943. Güzin Dino taught French at a secondary school in Adana. In 1946 she passed the necessary exams and became an associate professor at Ankara University . Abidin Dino left Turkey in 1952, settled in Paris and set up a studio in the French capital. Güzin followed him in 1954 and conducted research at the Center national de la recherche scientifique on the influence of the French language on Ottoman.

The new home of the dinosaurs quickly became a meeting place for artists and writers from Turkey. The couple had moved into a studio above Max Ernst's apartment on Saint-Michel and later lived in a small apartment in Paris' Rue de L'Eure. French friends as well as compatriots Nâzım Hikmet , Yaşar Kemal and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar often met at the dinosaurs. But they also helped young artists and students in Paris and introduced them to other artists.

In 1968 Güzin Dino received his doctorate on the development of the Turkish novel. She then taught Turkish language and literature at the Paris Institute for Oriental Languages ​​until 1975. There she also published an anthology of contemporary Turkish poetry. Between 1975 and 1990 she worked for Radio France Internationale , where she was responsible for the Turkish-language broadcasts.

In May 2013, Güzin Dino was admitted to hospital because she fell several times. She died on May 30, 2013 at the age of 102 and was buried in the Thiais cemetery.
