August Gustav Heinrich von Bongard

August Gustav Heinrich von Bongard , also Gustav Petrovich , Petrovic (č) Bongard , (born September 12, 1786 in Bonn , † November 1839 in Saint Petersburg ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Bong. “In Russian he is known as Густав Петрович Бонгард .

Live and act

Gustav Heinrich von Bongard worked in Saint Petersburg. He was one of the first botanists to describe the newly discovered plants in Alaska (then still part of Russia ). Most of the plants he describes came from the collection of Karl Heinrich Mertens in Sitka (Alaska). For example, von Bongard wrote the first description of the Sitka spruce and the red alder .

Honor taxon

The genus Bongardia of the plant family of the barberry family (Berberidaceae) was probably named after him .
