August Holder, around 1895

August Friedrich Nathanael Holder (born August 3, 1850 in Kohlberg , Württemberg; † June 17, 1918 in Kirchheim am Neckar ) was a German teacher , literary historian and local historian.

Life

The son of a primary school teacher followed the same career path and was trained as a teacher from 1865 at the Nürtingen preparatory facility, 1867–1868 at the Nürtingen seminar and 1868–1870 at the Esslingen seminar. He worked as a primary school teacher in Neuffen, Uhlbach, since 1876 in Winzerhausen.

From 1871, Holder published numerous articles and reviews in regional, folklore and linguistic journals, and from 1880 also books. His first book was a historical work about the Wunnenstein , which is largely based on previously published works by other authors and was supplemented by Holder with two legends he discovered. With his monograph Die Ortschroniken , he then laid a theoretical foundation for his long-standing practice of local historiography in 1886, with which he also interfered in the historians' dispute between imperial and local historians.

Holder's literary and local history commitment was not welcomed by all sides. In particular, Pastor Heintzeler von Winzerhausen, whom Holder assisted as organist and cantor, was critical of Holder's interference in village life as a whole and an “unhealthy influence” on the students as early as the 1880s. After he had changed to a teaching position in Erligheim in 1893 , Holder still had to defend himself in a trial for an anonymous insult against the pastor from Winzerhausen. His autobiographical work "The worst experiences of my life" from 1894 reports on it, among other things.

In the meantime, the main areas of his writing and editing activities had shifted to Swabian literary history and the Swabian dialect . He gave u. a. Works by Johannes Nefflen and Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener and was also considered a skilled dialect reciter. In 1899, Holder was also the founder of the Zabergäu club and publisher of its regional journal. In 1911 he wrote the Hohenbeilstein Plant in History on behalf of Robert Vollmöller , the owner of Hohenbeilstein Castle . In 1914, on the occasion of his retirement, he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Crown Order for his literary work. In his retirement he lived in Kirchheim am Neckar, where he was buried.

He was married to the daughter of the innkeeper Luise Pauline Ziegler from Winzerhausen. The marriage resulted in the two daughters Emma (* 1877) and Bertha (* 1878).
