August Piepenhagen
August Friedrich Piepenhagen (born August 2, 1791 in Soldin , Prussia , † September 27, 1868 in Prague , Austria-Hungary ) was a Prague landscape painter .
Life
August Piepenhagen came from a modest background and initially started an apprenticeship in button and lace-making. The journeyman's hike took him to Switzerland , where the impressive landscape inspired him to make self-taught attempts at painting. In 1831 he came to Prague on his hike, where he was to stay in the future. First exhibitions and his marriage in Prague followed. Piepenhagen had to do with feeding his family throughout his life, although he was able to sell a great many of his landscape paintings. His two daughters Charlotte (1821–1902) and Louise (1825–1893) were also trained as painters by him. Piepenhagen died on the Jenerálka estate near Prague. He was buried in the Protestant cemetery in the Prague suburb Karolinenthal (Karlín). His grave was designed by the sculptor Thomas Seidan .
Works
August Piepenhagen was a pure landscape painter who mainly acquired his skills autodidactically and was only able to create his pictures alongside his actual job. His landscapes, which were designed to be romantic and atmospheric, were very popular with the Prague public. His pictures were literally collected, but were also not very expensive to buy. Adalbert Stifter , himself also a landscape painter, valued Piepenhagen extremely and said that he was "the most poetic landscape painter I know now."
