August Scheler (born April 6, 1819 in Ebnat SG ; † 1890 ) was a Swiss linguist .

Scheler studied at the Universities of Erlangen , Bonn and Munich . When he was twenty, he settled in Brussels as a private lecturer . There Scheler advanced to royal librarianship in 1853 , but this was more of an honorary than a working title.

In 1876 Scheler was appointed professor of general language studies at the University (Brussels) and in 1884 the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium accepted him as a full member. In addition to his work as a lecturer, Scheler was particularly interested in the publication of numerous old French and old Provençal works. Among other things, he continued the “Etymological Dictionary of Romance Languages” by Friedrich Christian Diez and the “Dictionnaire étymologique de la langue wallone” by Charles Grandgagnage .

Scheler died in 1890 at the age of over seventy.
