August Schlueter (painter)
August Schlüter (born January 22, 1858 in Münster , † December 19, 1928 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter.
Life
The nephew of Dülmen's honorary citizen August Schlüter studied from May 1878 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Andreas Müller , Heinrich Lauenstein and Peter Janssen and from 1880 to 1887 in the landscape class of Eugen Dücker . Numerous pictures attest to his study trips to northern Germany, Switzerland and Italy. As early as the mid-1880s, he regularly took part in exhibitions in Düsseldorf. Above all, he created atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes and became an important representative of the Düsseldorf School of Painting at the turn of the century . Schlüter preferred a softly colored watercolor technique , but also painted in oil and lithographed . He often chose motifs from Italy. Around 1891 Schlüter had a studio in the Eiskellerberg at the same time as the painters Ernst Tode and Wilhelm Süs . From 1893 to 1928 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In addition to his pictures, he also created poems and plays. Part of his literary estate is kept by the artists' association Malkasten in Düsseldorf under the call number 578, including a printed festival with the title A Dream in the Alhambra from 1908.

Several of his works are now in public collections. The Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum in Hagen has one of his paintings.
Schlüter's paintings are particularly interesting because they show realistic cityscapes from bygone times. So is z. B. on a watercolor from 1894 to see the new port of Düsseldorf under construction. The sheet was purchased by the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf (signature: C 5199). An early work, Felder in Oberkassel near Düsseldorf , from 1884 shows the state before the opening of the Rhine bridge, which Oberkassel quickly transformed from an agricultural town into a metropolitan suburb. The oil painting has been in the Düsseldorf City Museum since 1929 (signature: B 1049). The 1903 watercolor view of the factory by Haniel and Lueg in Düsseldorf was also purchased by the Düsseldorf City Museum in 1939 and was given inventory number C 5285. It shows factory buildings of which only remains are preserved today.
There is also at least one work by Schlüter in the Dülmen city archive. A reproduction of a painting by Schlüter showing the Jewish cemetery in Dülmen is kept in the central archive for research into the history of Jews in Germany.
