August Schmidt (geophysicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl August von Schmidt (born January 1, 1840 in Diefenbach , Württemberg ; † March 21, 1929 in Stuttgart ) was a German geophysicist and meteorologist .

Life

August Schmidt, son of a teacher , devoted himself to studying theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen after completing his Abitur , where he switched to mathematics and natural sciences , and in 1863 he received his doctorate . Since 1864 he taught chemistry in Paris and Stuttgart, in 1868 he took up a position as an assistant teacher at the Dillmann Realgymnasium in Stuttgart, where he was appointed professor of mathematics and physics in 1872, and in 1904 he was retired.

From 1896 to 1912 he was also the director of the local meteorological central station, from 1902 to 1912 he was a member of the board of the earthquake research center in Strasbourg and from 1906 to 1912 that of the weather station on Lake Constance . Schmidt proved in 1888 that the rays of the earthquake waves do not have to propagate in a straight line in the earth, but rather curved upwards according to the law of refraction , with which he clearly recognized the connection between the true and apparent speed of propagation.

Schmidt, who developed his trifilar gravimeter used for earthquake research around 1900 , was elected to the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in 1898 , and was later appointed to the Privy Council . In 1920 he became an honorary member of the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg .
