August Ullrich (born January 22, 1857 in Kempten (Allgäu) ; † March 15, 1928 there ) was a businessman and local researcher in his hometown of Kempten. He is considered to be the discoverer of the Roman Cambodunum .

Life

In the second half of the 19th century, the middle class in Kempten experienced an epoch of historical awareness, also known as the "Horchler era", whose circle of communication and impact was the antiquity association founded in 1884 (now the Heimatverein Kempten ). The association's co-founder, Adolf Horchler, was the city's mayor for many years and was just as interested in local research as the autodidact of the archaeological community , August Ullrich.

A first site inspection took place together with Johannes Ranke , the founder of the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich , and the staff auditor Wilhelm Sand. Ullrich started digging on September 19, 1885 with two workers from his apartment on the monastery stairs . It was clear from the outset that they would stumble upon historical finds, as the peasants uncovered while plowing and even the moles on their heaps of Roman coins and shards . Within a few weeks, Ullrich uncovered the foundations of several buildings and was thus able to map the layout of the ancient city. In a first phase, the excavations lasted until 1892 and then again from 1909 to 1911. The Allgäuer Geschichtsfreund published since 1888 reported regularly on the work from its first edition.

August Ullrich died in March 1928 at the age of 71. His grave is in the Kempten Catholic Cemetery .
