Manfred Ranft

Manfred Ranft (born April 13, 1926 in Blankenstein ; † November 7, 2016 in Freital ) was a German teacher, local researcher and naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ranft ". The Ranfts hazel leaf blackberry ( Rubus ranftii ) is named after him.

Life

Manfred Ranft was born in Blankenstein near Wilsdruff . He served in World War II and was taken prisoner by the Soviets . After his release, he started studying education. After graduating, he became a teacher of biology and chemistry in Wilsdruff, now in the GDR .

As a teenager, he was already engaged in natural and local history research. He was inspired by his father Alfred Ranft (1895–1978), who was also a teacher, local researcher and co-founder of the local history museum of the town of Wilsdruff , and his school teachers. Since 1954 he has continuously worked on the flora of the Freital district for four decades . In later years he extended his research to the Elbe hill country and the adjacent areas.

He was particularly interested in plant sociological studies and from around 1975 also in batology ( blackberry science ). This became his specialty from then on. He not only worked on his immediate homeland, but also expanded his research to include the whole of today's Free State of Saxony at the end of the 1980s . He presented several publications on the subject.

Manfred Ranft also became internationally known in the field of batology. He wrote the first description of Stohr's hazel blackberry ( Rubus stohrii ) in 1998 .

In addition, Manfred Ranft also dealt with Wilsdruffer home history and researched a. a. about the life and work of Wilsdruffer personalities and originals. His monograph of the same name appeared in several editions as Volume II, 1 of the contributions to the local history of Wilsdruff , which are published by the Artur-Kühne-Verein (local group in the Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz e.V. ). Manfred Ranft also published the work Wilsdruffer Agriculture and Horticulture as Volume III of this series , which was also printed in several editions.

Honors

In his honor, Heinrich Weber named Ranfts hazel leaf blackberry ( Rubus ranftii ) in 1992 .

In 1996 Manfred Ranft became an honorary member of the Saxon Homeland Protection Association

In September 2011, Manfred Ranft was the first to receive the Artur Kühne Prize, which was awarded by the Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz e. V. is awarded.
