description
The path begins in the parking lot in front of the castle ruins. At the Schlossberghotel, the stairs go down to the Schlossberg caves , which belonged to the Hohenburg. Leaving this to the left, the path leads along the geological strata of the Buntsandstein towards the east. You cross the Schlossberg Höhenstraße and reach a picturesque rock path. From there it goes to the stump summit and you cross Käshofer Straße (L 120).
After another kilometer you reach the Karlsbergweiher , which was part of the Karlsberg Palace. As at all stations of the former castle, information boards can be found here. After a steep ascent behind the Karlsberg spring you reach the orangery , the largest remaining ruin of the castle. Now it goes to the main palace, which is only a few meters away. You cross the courtyard there and after about 500 meters on the so-called apple avenue you reach a sloping path that leads to the deer fountain . After about a hundred meters you cross a pond and take a path uphill to the more than 200 year old duke chestnut trees .
From here, turning twice to the left, you reach Karlslust , the private garden of Duke Charles II August. First you reach the Bärenzwinger , then go downhill to the swan ponds . These are in Rhineland-Palatinate; the stilling basin belonging to the ensemble is located in Saarland. It continues downhill into the valley of the Lambsbach and you cross the road to Käshofen for the second time . We continue through the valley of the stream; you pass the Vogelhausquelle and after an intermediate moor you reach the Merwoog near Kirrberg . The ruins of the Merburg are located on the edge of the valley above the Lambsbach stream. The tour leads past the Kirrberg fish pond to the right and from now on it goes uphill before entering a small valley with sandstone rocks . Soon the hill is reached again, and you strive for the Schlossberg again. Here you hike the ruins of the Hohenburg at the end of the tour and, when you return to the starting point, you can still enjoy the view.
