In 1847, at the age of twelve, the parents sent their son to Copenhagen for further training, where he was accepted into the home of the musician family Johann Peter Emilius Hartmann . There, Niels Wilhelm Gade , his later brother-in-law, taught him the subjects of composition and theory. He took piano lessons from the Danish court pianist Carl Reinecke , and later from Anton Rée (1820–1886). and Wilhelm Holm. After his concert debut in Copenhagen in 1851, he quickly became the most important Danish pianist of his time, making a name for himself in particular as an interpreter of the works of Beethoven and Mozart and writing solo cadenzas for some of their piano concertos. In 1867 Winding was employed as a piano teacher at the newly founded Det Kongelige Danske Music Conservatory . In 1869 he received the DelAnckerske Legat and was able to travel to Leipzig with the prize money. Here his piano quartet op. 17 was performed in the Gewandhaus . In 1872, however, an illness in his arm forced him to interrupt his concert and teaching activities for several years. In 1890 he was awarded the Danish Order of Knight Dannebrogorden . In 1892 he received the title of professor and with it a lifelong pension from the Danish state art fund (Livsvarig kunstnerydelse).
