August von Heckel (born September 26, 1824 in Landshut , † October 26, 1883 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Since he was destined for the civil servant status due to the expectations of his father, the district and city court director Joseph von Heckel , only after overcoming great difficulties was able to attend the art school in Augsburg, where he stayed for two years. He then entered the Academy in Munich and trained under Karl Schorn and, after his death (1850), under Philipp von Foltz .

From 1855 on he painted pictures from the area of ​​romanticism and the cozy genre , with motifs such as Chactas and Atala ; Mignon ; Gretchen on the spinning wheel ; The emigrants etc.

During a three-year stay in Italy he turned to history painting and the Italian genre, but seldom got beyond an outward, sometimes somewhat theatrical way of depicting the events.

August von Heckel died in Munich on October 26, 1883.
