Augusta von Buttlar (née Ernst) studied from 1810 at the Art Academy in Dresden under Johann Friedrich Matthäi . After participating in several exhibitions at the Art Academy in Dresden and a stay in Frankfurt am Main in 1818, she enrolled in 1821 as a “dilettante” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. There she was tutored by Robert and Peter von Langer .

During a lengthy stay in Paris in 1822/23, which she undertook with her husband Heinrich von Buttlar, she was taught in François Gérard's studio . From 1824 stays in London (with her uncle August Wilhelm Schlegel ), Bonn, Rome, Dresden, Bohemia and Vienna can be proven.
