Robert Corwegh

Robert E. Corwegh (born April 24, 1878 in Breslau ; died January 14, 1929 in Hamburg ) was a German writer and art historian who worked in Breslau, Weimar , Leipzig , Darmstadt and Hamburg, among others .

Life

Robert Corwegh was the son of the banker Joseph Corwegh and Emma Renier. He attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in Breslau until he graduated from high school in Easter 1898. He then began studying architecture, art history and physics at the Technical University of Munich . From autumn 1898 he continued his studies at the Technical University Berlin-Charlottenburg . From the winter semester of 1902/03 he studied art history at the University of Halle , where he received his doctorate from Adolph Goldschmidt in 1905 with a dissertation written at the suggestion of Rudolf Kautzsch , The Two Types of Flat-Covered Romanesque Basilica in Saxon Lands . During his time in Halle, he was also involved in the free student body .

In 1908 he was with Robert Raffay and Leo Heidrich one of the founders of the Xenien Verlag in Leipzig, which was founded with the aim of publishing the monthly Xenien for literature and art , publishing literary studies and promoting young artists; the magazine was published until July 1914. For volume 5, in 1911 he was a temporary employee of the editorial team of the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present in Leipzig. From 1911 to 1913 he gave lectures at the Grand Ducal Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar. He was proposed for an award on May 18, 1914 by the Academy of Fine Arts together with Hermann Graf and was awarded the Knight's Cross II. Department of the Grand Ducal House Order of Vigilance or the White Falcon on April 14, 1916 .

Together with Julius Nathansohn, he published the magazine Ex libris between 1913 and 1918 . Book art and applied graphics published by the "Deutsche Exlibris Gesellschaft" in Berlin. He published numerous articles in magazines such as German Art and Decoration , Interior Decoration , Die Kunst , Deutscher Wille des Kunstwart , Der Kunstwanderer or monthly issues on art on contemporary art history. He was also active in literature, for example published a picture book with verses (1920) and the story Der Menschenbildner (1925).

In 1918 he became an advisory board member and secretary for artistic affairs at the Permanent Council for Art Preservation in the Grand Duchy of Hesse in Darmstadt. In 1920 he lived in Darmstadt and taught art history at the technical schools in Offenbach am Main. When he died he was the managing director of Hamburger Volksheim eV

Corweg's sister was Käte Cohn-Renard, who together with her brother supported the Silesian Museum of Fine Arts in Breslau. Several donations, for example a fragment of an Etruscan marble sarcophagus from Volterra in 1908 and Corweg's own publications on the art of Italy or books were included. After his death in 1929, his sister gave the Silesian Museum a sculpture by Adam Antes in accordance with his will .
