course

The Augustaanlage runs between Friedrichsplatz with the Mannheim water tower and the city entrance on Europaplatz at the Mannheim Planetarium . As an eastern entry and exit road, it leads the traffic coming from the A 656 via the B 37 from Heidelberg through the Oststadt into the city center and vice versa.

history

City map from 1905 showing the beginnings of the Augustaanlage

The Augustaanlage was named after the German Empress and Queen of Prussia , Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . The part bordering on Friedrichsplatz was built in the first years after 1900. The development started from the city to the east. The house numbers run accordingly. The avenue, planted in two rows with plane trees on a wide median , was laid out in the anniversary year 1907 (300 years of the city of Mannheim) for the International Art and Horticultural Exhibition . As the development of the eastern part of the city increased, the street was expanded to its present length by the end of the 1920s. In 1935 the Reichsautobahn Mannheim – Heidelberg, today A 656, was reopened as an extension .

The Mannheim Art Association

Around 40,000 cars use this route in and out of the city center every day. There are several important companies in the representative street. With its planting, the avenue makes an important contribution to improving the climate in the city.

The Mannheim culture mile leads through the green area of the avenue, where numerous contemporary sculptures are displayed. The Mannheimer Kunstverein , one of the oldest German art associations , is also located in the Augustaanlage with its exhibition building.

From spring 2011, the green area was partially redesigned with a continuous central promenade. The old plane trees were felled in several construction phases and replaced by 228 young trees by summer 2014, after most of the over hundred-year-old plane trees were attacked by the fungal disease Massaria and could no longer be preserved. It was financed through a three-year donation campaign. The redesigned facility was inaugurated in mid-May 2015.
