Auguste Bouvier

Auguste Bouvier (born February 16, 1826 in Geneva ; † November 2, 1893 ibid) was a Swiss Reformed theologian .

Life

Auguste Bouvier was born on February 16, 1826 in Geneva, the son of a pastor . He studied theology at the universities of Geneva and Berlin from 1845 to 1851 and became Adolphe Monod's assistant in the Paris evangelization work, whose daughter Louise he married in 1854. In 1853 he worked as a pastor at the French Church in London , but then took over a pastorate in Céligny the following year and one in the St. Gervais district in Geneva in 1857. In 1861 he resigned his parish and was appointed professor of apologetics and homiletics at the University of Genevacalled; four years later he also taught dogmatics . He died on November 2, 1893 in Geneva.

In his theological direction, influenced by Schleiermacher in particular, Bouvier sought to mediate the so-called Evangelical party, to which he was initially attached, with liberal theology.
