Auguste Capelier

Auguste Charles Jean Capelier (born April 2, 1905 in Paris , France , † May 4, 1977 there ) was a French film architect .

Life

Born in Paris, he began working as a journalist in the 1920s and then went into the construction industry. Auguste Capelier came to film in 1940 through his work there as a draftsman . Since 1941, Capelier has designed - initially in the zone unoccupied by the Germans - as a set designer, initially in collaboration with Georges Wakhévitch , a series of film structures for less important productions. After the country was liberated in 1945, colleagues like Paul Bertrand and Alexandre Trauner were temporarily his partners.

Capelier's most important film buildings came into being in the first 15 post-war years, when he designed the decorations for some top productions, including Jules Dassin's break-in classic “ Rififi ”, the episode film “The Seven Sins”, Marcel Carné's social melodrama “ Marie from the Harbor ”, Georges Franjus' atmospheric horror film “ The house of horrors of Dr. Rasanoff ” as well as several box-office productions by the brothers Marc and Yves Allégret such as“ The daisy is defoliated ”with top erotic star Brigitte Bardot . Above all in the 1960s, Capelier was in charge of scene design, but also a number of American productions that were made in France. At the beginning of the 1970s, Auguste Capelier withdrew into private life.
