Paul François Bertrand (born April 4, 1915 in Chalon-sur-Saône , France , † April 19, 1994 in Saint-Tropez , ibid) was a French film architect .

Live and act

Bertrand had studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and initially worked as an advertising artist and decorator. He gained his first experience in the film business as an assistant to the famous film architect Alexandre Trauner . When the Jew Trauner had to go underground during the German occupation of France, Bertrand was able to work as chief scene designer for the first time. He initially designed the buildings for films by the brothers Marc and Yves Allégret , and after the end of the war in 1945, he also designed the sets for productions by important directors René Clément , Louis Daquin , Marcel Carné , Augusto Genina and Alexandre Astruc . His best-known films are Carné's “ Thérèse Raquin ” and Cléments Gervaise ”, “with which Bertrand evoked the world of the bourgeoisie, large and small, from Émile Zola's novels before the turn of the century.”
