action

Jeanne Dandieu grew up on her parents' father's estate in Normandy . Her great love belongs to the sea, on which she often goes on long sailing tours. One day a violent storm approaches that capsizes your boat. Julian de Lamare, a young country gentleman, saves her from drowning. Jeanne's parents are overjoyed when Julian brings Jeanne home safely. The young people fall in love and soon they are married in the village church.

For Jeanne, love for her husband is paramount. But it doesn't take long before she realizes that he's a loner and that his moods are becoming more and more unpredictable. He also lets her understand that he only married her because of her large dowry in order to be able to pay off his debts. However, Jeanne hopes that with a lot of patience she can make a better person out of Julien.

When Jeanne's maid Rosalie gives birth to a child, Julien first wants to chase her off the farm. Jeanne, however, contradicts her husband for the first time and stands protectively in front of the maid. She still stands by Rosalie when she learned that her husband is the father of the newborn and that Rosalie is obedient behind her back.

After a while, Jeanne separates from her maid so as not to subject her marriage to even greater stress. The relationship with her husband does not improve even when she gives him a son. After Jeanne's parents died, she only lived for her son Paul. The married couple live side by side; the property begins to go into neglect.

One day the family has new neighbors: Count Fourcheville and his attractive wife Gilberte. It doesn't take long for the beautiful woman to have a relationship with Julien. The count, who adores his wife, finds out about them. When he tries to confront Julien, Julien is not at home. But he suspects where the lovers might be: in the old shepherd's cart on the edge of the cliff. Once there, he pushes the bolt and lets the car crash down the slope into the sea.

Jeanne, now a widow, mourns her husband. He lives on in her son.

criticism

The lexicon of international films is full of praise: “Astruc, who developed the theory of“ caméra stylo ”before the“ nouvelle vague ”,“ wrote ”this film […] based on Maupassant's novella: his style is extremely precise! The settings are structured rhythmically with the dialogues; the dramaturgical design of the film results in a narrative in pictures that is full of poetry and accuracy. A film that broke the boundaries of the French narrative cinema customary at the time and set new standards. ”In its edition of March 18, 1959 , Der Spiegel takes a different view :“ In this film, the Maupassant- Novel 'Une Vie'. In the female lead, Maria Schell suffers the nasty fate of a humiliated and betrayed wife less thirst for tears than in her earlier films. The former film critic and current director Alexandre Astruc routinely staged a cold costume soul splendor with stylish color pictures. ”The Wiesbaden Film Evaluation Office awarded the work the title“ Valuable ”.
