Augustin Baumtrog (* 1883 in Mariental in the Volga region , Russian Empire ; † March 1937 on the Solovetsky Islands , Soviet Union ) was a Russian-German Roman Catholic clergyman , pastor and apostolic administrator for the Volga region .

biography

After completing the Saratov seminary in 1909 and studying at the university in Innsbruck in Austria in 1911, he headed the parish in Roschdestwenskoje (Fürstendorf) in the Kuban area from 1914 to 1917 . From 1917 to 1919 he was pastor in Mariental and at the same time parish administrator in Marienburg in the Samara governorate .

After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in November 1917, he took an active part in the founding of the “People's Association for German Catholics on the Volga” and published the association newspaper “German Voice”. From 1922 to 1926 he was pastor in Astrakhan . In 1926 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator for the entire Volga region by the special papal representative. In 1930 he was arrested and on April 20, 1931, in a group trial against the Volga German clergy, he was first sentenced to death by shooting and then “pardoned” for 10 years in a prison camp. He died in custody in the GULAG camp on the Solovetsky Islands in March 1937.
