Augustin Dontenwill OMI (born June 4, 1857 in Bischwiller , France, † November 30, 1931 in Rome ) was a French religious, Archbishop of Vancouver and superior general of his order.

Life

Augustin Dontenwill entered the community of the Oblates and took vows on August 15, 1880 . He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1885 .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on April 19, 1897 coadjutor in the Diocese of New Westminster and titular bishop of Germanicopolis . On August 22, 1897, the Archbishop of Saint-Boniface , Louis-Philippe Adélard Langevin OMI, gave him episcopal ordination ; Co - consecrators were Pierre-Paul Durieu OMI, Bishop of New Westminste, and Isidore Clut OMI, Auxiliary Bishop of Athabaska Mackenzie . On June 1, 1899, he became Bishop of New Westminster. With the elevation of the diocese of New Westminster on September 19, 1908 by Pope Pius X. to the archbishopric of Vancouver , he became the first archbishop there. Just one day later, on September 20, 1908, he was elected Superior General of the Oblates and on December 15 of the same year he resigned from the office of Archbishop of Vancouver. On January 29, 1909, he was named titular archbishop pro hac vice of Ptolemais in Phenicia and went to Rome. On January 19, 1910, Neil McNeil became Archbishop of Vancouver. During his time as coadjutor bishop he was responsible for the construction of the Cathedral of the Holy Rosary in Vancouver . Augustin Dontenwill died in Rome on November 30, 1931.
