Augustine Misago

Augustin Misago (* 1943 in Ruvune, Rwanda ; † March 12, 2012 in Gikongoro , Rwanda) was Bishop of Gikongoro .

Life

Augustin Misago was ordained a priest on July 25, 1971 . He was the rector of the Nyakibanda seminary .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Gikongoro on March 30, 1992. Jozef Cardinal Tomko , President of the Pontifical Committee for World Eucharistic Congresses , ordained him episcopal on June 28, 1992 ; Co - consecrators were Jean-Baptiste Gahamanyi , Bishop of Astrida , and Joseph Ruzindana , Bishop of Byumba . He was committed to the holy virgin in Kibeho who was venerated as Nyina wa Jambo ( mother of the word ) .

In 1999 he was arrested and charged with involvement in the genocide in Rwanda and for participating in the murder of 150,000 Tutsi in his diocese . In particular, he was held responsible for the murder of 30 students who allegedly sought protection from him. After 14 months in prison, the Kigali court acquitted him of the charges.
