Augustine Hu Daguo ( Chinese  胡大国 , Pinyin Hú Dàguó ; born May 15, 1922 in Tongzhou, Guizhou; † February 17, 2011 ) was the first Chinese Roman Catholic bishop of Shiqian after Father Ludwig Baumeister MSC and Father Matthias Buchholz MSC .

Life

Augustine Hu Daguo entered the Minor Seminary in 1934 and the Major Seminary in Guiyang Diocese in 1939 . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951 . After a brief activity as parish vicar in the parish of Youtangkou, teaching at the seminary and appointment as bishop coadjutor , he was a victim of the communists' seizure of power and finally arrested on April 4, 1955 by the Chinese authorities and convicted of "counterrevolutionary crimes". After three years in the Guizhou Detention Center, he was sentenced in 1958 to an additional twelve years of forced labor and re-education in three factories in the area. In 1968 he was sent to the Fuquan factory as an outdoor prisoner. After his release after 27 years he was able to work as a priest again; also taught at the theological seminary of Chengdu in Sichuan Province.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Shiqian on 1987. He received his episcopal ordination in secret from the Bishop of Baoding, Peter Joseph Fan Xueyan . On the other hand, he was never able to take over the management of his diocese, since it was officially dissolved by the Chinese side in 1983 and the position has been vacant since then .

After an accident in 1999, Hu had to struggle with various health problems and was only able to exercise his commitment to a limited extent. Most recently he was a priest at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Guiyang .

He was buried in Shiqui Cathedral on February 20, 2011 after a requiem.
