Augustus Frederick Sherman , also Augustus F. Sherman or according to DNB Augustus Francis Sherman (born July 9, 1865 in Lynn , Pennsylvania , USA , † February 18, 1925 in New York City , USA) was an American official of the Bureau of Immigration , the United States immigration service, and photographer .

Life

Sherman's life data are very sparse. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and came to New York City in 1884. There he found employment with the Immigration Service on Ellis Island in 1892 and became an inspector at the end of his career. He was a hobby photographer and between 1905 and 1925 took around 250 portraits and family photos of immigrants who had to wait for their entry applications to be processed on the island.

reception

Sherman had the gift of convincing many of those portrayed to wear the traditional costumes they had brought with them for the photos. These rare documents have been shown both on Ellis Island and in other places in recent years, for example in 2006 at the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven .
