Episcopal Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Episcopal Church (from Greek / Latin episcopalis , “episcopal”) is a denomination within the Christian ecumenical community . It marks churches that are not Roman Catholic , but, in contrast to the Protestant churches of Lutheran and Reformed character , have retained the historical tripartite office ( bishop , priest , deacon ) in the continuity of the apostolic succession and see this as essential for their self-image. Episcopal churches thus occupy a middle position between Catholicism and Protestantism , also in liturgy and teaching .

In fact, the name is the distinguishing feature of the Anglican Church Fellowship , which emerged from the Church of England , whose member churches outside England call themselves the Episcopal Church of ... (see list of Anglican churches ).
