Aukusti Uotila (born May 5, 1858 in Urjala , † March 18, 1886 in Ajaccio ) was a Finnish landscape painter.

Life

The son of the farmer Antti Uotila and his wife Ulrika Maria, née Laatu, studied from 1873 to 1876 at the art school of the Finnish Art Association (Suomen Taideyhdistys) and from 1876 to 1877 as a student of the in Düsseldorf with Andreas Müller , Hans Fredrik Gude and Oswald Achenbach and in Karlsruhe again with Gude trained landscape painter Hjalmar Munsterhjelm at the drawing school of the university in Helsingfors (Helsinki). From 1877 to 1879 he was enrolled at the École des beaux-arts in Paris , including with the German-born painter Henri Lehmann . After a short stay in Finland, he stayed again in France in various places from 1879 to 1880. His whole life was marred by poor health and poverty; he died in Corsica of a lung disease that broke out in 1881. He was also buried in Corsica.

Uotila first exhibited in Helsingfors in 1879 and received a state scholarship in the same year and thereafter in 1880 and 1885. In 1884 he was awarded a second ducat prize by the Finnish Art Association. In the fall of 1886 the Finnish Art Association organized a memorial exhibition, together with works by John Victor (Johannes) Takanen (1849–1885).

In his artistic work, Uotila dealt with a realistic landscape representation, the best results of which were created in Paris. Works can be found in the Ateneum and the Cygnaeuksen Gallery in Helsinki as well as in the art museums of Turku , Tampere and the Pohjanmaan Museo in Vaasa .
