Sowing size

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sowing measure is a quantity of seed that is required to cultivate an arable area. It is an imprecise measure of measurement like that for the generic term wine measure , salt measure or oil measure .

Two variants are and were possible. First: The amount of seed is fixed and it is determined on the area. Second: The area is fixed and the amount of seed is calculated. Case 1 has grown historically with a fixed amount of seed to determine the area. The soil quality, lean or strong soil, was taken into account in many measurements in the past, but was only an attempt to take into account the various influences. Even the difference in the seeds ( oats , wheat , rye and other seeds) has an influence, which can still be influenced with the measure of capacity . The sowing time also played a role. Less seeds when ordered early influenced the measure. The inaccuracies are inherent in all measures of this group.

In modern agriculture, these measures have been replaced by metric measures and have become more accurate through science. They are still essential for planning today. In the past, the measure of the seed was taken from the bushel , metzel or the valid capacity of the region and so the area size to be cultivated was known as a guideline. Often taxes or payments in kind from the expected crop were based on this measure.

example

As an example a sowing measure in Lippe-Detmold :

  • 1 bushel (seed) gave 80 square rods = 17.1659 ares

For comparison the measurements of one morning :

  • 1 acre = 120 square rods = 25.7488 ares
