Austin Allen Romine (born November 22, 1988 in Lake Forest , California ) is an American baseball player . He currently plays with the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher .

Career

Early years

Romine attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California, where he played with Nolan Arenado on the school's baseball team. He was selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft .

In 2009, Romine was named Florida State League Player of the Year. In 2010 he took part in the All-Star Futures Game .

2011

After Romine had fought for the majore league backup catcher job in spring training with the Yankees, he started the season with the Double-A Trenton Thunder . The Yankees promoted Romine to the Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees on September 1 . After injuring two catchers, first Russell Martin and then Francisco Cervelli , the Yankees promoted him to the Major League on September 10. Romine made his major league debut in the seventh inning of the game against the Angels on September 11. On September 12, he scored his first major league hit against Dan Cortes of the Mariners .

2012

Romine missed most of the 2012 season due to a herniated disc .

2013

When Cervelli suffered a broken hand on April 26, 2013, the Yankees Romine again promoted to the Major League. On August 4, Romine hit the first home run of his Major League career against pitcher Dale Thayer of the San Diego Padres . On September 10th, he suffered a concussion when he was hit by a foul ball in the mask. At the end of the season he had a batting average of 0.207.

2014

Romine spent most of the season with the Yankees' minor league teams, but was called to the Yankees several times with injuries to various players.

2015

Romine also spent most of the 2015 season in Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. On September 1, he was called to the Yankees.

2016

During Spring Training 2016 Romine won the backup catcher competition over top catcher Gary Sánchez . In 2016 Romine played 62 games as the Yankees' backup catcher, had a batting average of .242 with 4 homers and 26 RBI.

2017

In 2017, Romine started the season as a backup for Gary Sanchez. After an injury to Sanchez on April 8, Romine was the starting catcher of the Yankees until Sanchez returned in early May. On August 24, Romine got into an argument with Miguel Cabrera . Cabrera pushed Romine and started a brawl, and both players were disfellowshipped. The next day, August 25, Romine was suspended for two games.

2018

Romine became the Yankees' primary catcher after Gary Sánchez was injured in June and again in July. On July 24th, Romine was announced as the Yankees' Heart and Hustle Prize Winner.

2019

On April 21, Romine hit his first career walk-off hit, an RBI single in a 7–6 win over the Kansas City Royals .

On July 25, Romine made his first regular season pitching appearance against the Boston Red Sox . Romine allowed three runs on four hits.
