Francisco Cervelli (born March 6, 1986 in Valencia , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan baseball player in the major league . He currently plays as a catcher with the Miami Marlins .

biography

Venezuela

Cervelli played in Venezuela on the positions of shortstop and second baseman, occasionally as a pitcher . In 2003 he was signed by the New York Yankees as an international free agent on condition that he be a catcher.

Minor Leagues

In the minor leagues , Cervelli played in the Yankees' farming system. In 2007 he had a batting average of .279 with an on-base percentage of .387 and 2 home runs with the A + team Tampa Yankees . The 2008 season began with an injury: In spring training , Cervelli broke his right wrist while trying to block home plate . As a result, the start of the season was delayed to June 2008. He finished the minor league season with Double-A-Team Trenton Thunder with a batting average of .308. At the same club he started the 2009 season. Baseball America magazine named Cervelli for four consecutive seasons (2006-2009) as the Yankees' best defensive catcher.

Major League

After the 2008 minor league season, Cervelli was appointed to the major league by the Yankees. He played his first game in the MLB on September 18, 2008 as a defensive replacement catcher. After starting the 2009 season with Trenton Thunder, he was called up again on May 5, 2009 after an injury to Yankee catcher Jorge Posada . His first start as a catcher was on May 7th, 2009, after the Yankees' second catcher, José Molina, suffered an injury. After Molina's return from the injured list, Cervelli was sent to the Triple-A Team Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees in July 2009 , but returned to the Yankees in September 2009.

In the 2010 season , Cervelli is a substitute catcher for Jorge Posada on the 25-man roster of the Yankees. Due to an injury Posada, he has been used in 88 games so far.

Following his involvement in the Biogenesis baseball scandal , Cervelli accepted a 50-game ban in 2013.

World Baseball Classic

At the World Baseball Classic 2009 , Cervelli, whose father was born in Italy, played for the Italian team.
