Austrian Lightning Detection & Information System
ALDIS , Austrian Lightning Detection & Information System is the Austrian lightning detection system .
Participants in this project, which has been working since 1991, are the ÖVE and the APG.
The system records all thunderstorm lightning by means of 8 sensors that are distributed all over Austria . The sensors are located in Hohenems (VBG), Schwaz (Unterinntal, TIR), Hitzging ( Eggelsberg municipality in the Innviertel OOE), Dobersberg (Waldviertel, NOE), Bad Vöslau (Vienna Basin, NOE), Niederöblarn (Ennstal, STM), Fürstenfeld (Oststeiermark, STM), and Nötsch (Gailtal, KTN). Each of the sensors has a range of 400 km and an accuracy of 1 km. ALDIS uses LS7000 sensors from Vaisala .
Since 1998, direct lightning strikes and their parameters such as the course of lightning currents have been systematically measured at the Gaisberg transmitter with a corresponding measuring system on the transmitter tower. In April 2014, a lightning current measuring system with two sensors was installed 20 m above the tower room on the south tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral , which records the parameters of the lightning strikes on the lightning rod.
This project has various goals:
- Research on the origins and effects of lightning: This allows lightning protection systems to be further developed.
- Thunderstorm warning: Interested bodies such as weather services or flight surveillance can be warned as soon as there are signs of a thunderstorm .
- An archiving of all lightning strikes, so that it can also be traced in retrospect where there were strikes at a certain time. Fire insurance companies are very interested in this , as they can more easily control whether it is insurance fraud .
ALDIS is integrated into the pan-European project EUCLID ( European Cooperation for Lightning Detection ) .
It is accessible online via the environmental hazard service HORA (hora.gv.at) of the Ministry of Life.
