features

Lignified, often liana-shaped species belong to this order. The wood parenchyma is paratracheal. The nodes are unilacunar with two leaf traces.

The vascular bundles of the petioles are curved. The stomata are often laterocytic. Secretory cells (Austrobaileyaceae and Schisandraceae) are often found on the underside of the leaf. At least in Schisandra and Austrobaileya, the embryo sac has four cells and consists of only one pole core, two synergids and the egg cell.

The fruits are berry-like . The cells of the meso testa of the seeds are sclerotic. The endosperm is starchy.
