Avan Yu

Avan Yu (born July 19, 1987 in Hong Kong ) is a Canadian pianist of Chinese origin.

Life

Avan Yu made his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14. Since then he has been invited to concerts on a regular basis; in May 2009 he was the soloist on the orchestra's first concert tour in 30 years. He is the silver medalist and the Audience Award winner at the 2008 Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition and is the only pianist to win both categories (Junior and Senior) of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. He is also the winner of many national and international competitions, for example 1st prize at the Chopin Competition in Canada, 2nd prize at the Cantu International Music Competition and 3rd prize at the Kissinger Piano Olympics 2010.

His Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall) New York debut took place in October 2008. At a charity concert in Ottawa, he appeared with Yo-Yo Ma and Pinchas Zukerman, among others . He was also heard with the Canadian National Arts Center Orchestra under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman, at the Rheingau Festival , the Kissinger Sommer and at the Chopin Festivals in Montreal, Toronto, Marianske Lazne, as well as in other cities.

Avan Yu has also played with orchestras such as the Dresden Philharmonic , Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Slovak Radio Symphony, New Lusatian Philharmonic , Victoria Symphony, Ottawa Symphony, Windsor Symphony, Xiamen Philharmonic in China, Morocco Philharmonic Orchestra and Seattle Youth Orchestra. His concerts have been broadcast on WQXR New York, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation , Bayerischer Rundfunk , NDR Kultur Hamburg, SWR , China Central Television and Radio, Radiotelevisión Española and Radio Nacional de España .

Other concerts include debuts in the Philharmonie with the Berlin Classic Players, recitals in the Auditorio Nacional de Musica in Madrid and the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and chamber music at the Kissinger Sommer.
