action

Julien, a young boy, leaves his house and walks down the street. He meets his teacher and tells her that he is getting cigarettes for his father. The teacher reminds him of tomorrow's teachers' conference. Julien continues down the street and under a bridge, where Miriam, his mother, picks him up. Together they drive to a bus stop and take his crying sister Gaelle with them.

Together they drive to Miriam's workplace, a supermarket. She leaves her children with a coworker and speaks to her manager to inform him that she has to go at night. He asks her if she wants to take legal action against her husband, but she replies that she doesn't have time. The manager agrees to fire her so that she can receive a severance package.

Before they leave the shop, however, Miriam's husband Antoine comes in to talk to her. Julien and Gaelle cry and ask their mother not to talk to him. Miriam puts on her work clothes and you can see cuts and bruises on her body. Antoine asks her about her checkbook and apparently doesn't know anything about Miriam's plan. She gives it to him and goes away.

Miriam and her children leave the shop to meet their sister and her husband. The group sees Antoine in the parking lot and hides behind parked cars until he drives away. As soon as he's gone, they run across the parking lot to Miriam's sister's car.

The last shot shows a car that may be Antoines. It turns and begins to follow Miriam's sister's car.
