Avijit Roy

Avijit Roy ( Bengali অভিজিৎ রায় Abhijit Rāẏ ; * 1972 or 1973 in Bangladesh ; † February 26, 2015 in Dhaka , Bangladesh) was an American religious critic of Bengali origin.

Life

Roy was the son of the physicist Ajoy Roy . From 1990 he studied engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology . This was followed by a doctorate in Singapore and a research stay at a university in the USA. In 2007 he emigrated to the USA, he lived in Alpharetta in the US state of Georgia and was a full-time software developer.

As the founder and one of the operators of the blog Mukto-mona , which is critical of religion , Roy was exposed to death threats from religious fanatics. Rokomari.com, an e-commerce platform, was forced to stop selling Roy's books following death threats. Roy, whose ancestors were Hindus , described himself as a secular humanist .

His blog Mukto-mona (free spirit) was in 2014 Weblog Award The BOBs of Deutsche Welle have been nominated. Avijit Roy founded Mukto-mona on May 26, 2001, initially as a Yahoo group; a little later the blog was set up as a website of its own with the financial support of a Canadian humanist.

Roy was slain with machetes by religious fanatics in 2015 after appearing at a book fair in Bangladesh. His wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna survived several knife wounds. An Islamist group called Ansar Bangla-7 claimed responsibility for the attack.

The International Humanist and Ethical Union paid tribute to Avijit Roy and condemned his murder. Roy's death recalls the case of the humanist Ahmed Rajib Haider , who was also murdered in his home country for his humanist work, and the case of the blogger Washiqur Rahman Babu , who was murdered five weeks after Roy.

Roy published eight books in Bengali as well as articles in newspapers and journals. He achieved notoriety above all with his works Obisshahser Dorshon (The Philosophy of Unbelief) and Biswasher Virus (The Virus of Faith).
