Avner Cohen

Avner Cohen (* 1951 ) is an Israeli philosopher and author. One of his topics is the Israeli nuclear armament .

Life

Cohen studied philosophy at Tel Aviv University until 1975 before obtaining his MA from York University in 1977 and Ph.D. in 1981. from the Committee on History of Culture at the University of Chicago . From 1983 to 1991 he worked at the Philosophical Faculty of Tel Aviv University and was visiting professor at various US universities.

Cohen has published numerous newspaper articles and books dealing with philosophical issues of nuclear armament and deterrence , particularly in the Middle East . From 1987 to 1988 he was a research fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. In 1989 he was awarded the MacArthur Research and Writing Fellowship for his research on nuclear weapons and democracy in Israel .

From 1990 to 1995 Cohen was the vice-director of a project on nuclear arms control in the Middle East at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He worked on similar questions as a Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace , where he worked in 1997 and 1998. At this time he also published his best-known work Israel and the bomb , which appeared in four languages ​​and six editions. The book and Cohen's theses were presented in the ZDF-History series in the documentary Israel and the Bomb in 2012 . The book was a significant provocation for the Israeli authorities, among other things, Cohen was banned from entering Israel for an intended lecture.

Cohen Senior is a Research Fellow of the National Security Archive at George Washington University .
