Avni Kurgan (born January 27, 1910 in Istanbul , † 1976 ) was a Turkish football goalkeeper . Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul and as his own generation, he is very strongly associated with this club and viewed by club and fan sites as one of the most important personalities in the club's history. He was part of the Galatasaray team that dominated Turkish football in the 1920s and 1930s and won five of eight possible Istanbul championships. In the 1930s he also wore the captain's armband for a while.

Player career

society

Kurgan played in the youth department of Galatasaray Istanbul and was included in the professional squad here during the 1929/30 season. He came in this season in the game of İstanbul Ligi (dt. Istanbul League ) on January 24, 1930 against arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul to use and made his professional debut. Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. In the further course of the season Kurgan pushed Rasim Atala from the regular goalkeeper post and became with his team behind the arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul Istanbul runner-up. In the next season, Kurgan also prevailed against long-time goalkeeper Ulvi Yenal and guarded the goal in all 14 league games. With his club, he finished the season as a champion and won his first title.

Kurgan played for Galatasaray until the summer of 1940. After a controversy had developed within the club in 1933, about half of the team's squad left the club and founded the rival club Güneş SK . After this split, Kurgan's team lost connection to the top of the table and remained in the Istanbul championship without winning the title until the 1948/49 season . Only in the 1938/1939 season could the title be won in the Milli Küme , a kind of championship tournament in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated.

National team

Kurgan began his national team career in 1931 with a use for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Bulgarian national team . By April 1932 Kurgan completed two more international matches and was then no longer nominated.
