The Avon River is a small river in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales .

The river lies in Local Government Area Wollongong City .
It rises about four kilometers west of Calderwood , flows north and joins the Cordeaux River south of Wilton .
The Avon River is one of four rivers in the Upper Nepean System . The Lake Avon , the largest of the four reservoirs in the Upper Nepean Scheme was built in 1921-1927 and provided the Greater Sydney with water. In 1963 the water was diverted to the Illawarra region to meet the growing demand for water there. Today the reservoir supplies all of Wollongong .
